Poem by Zaid Shakir

I’m honored that poet and scholar Zaid Shakir felt compelled to write a poem in reaction to my painting Squinting in the Sun 2.

“Men Waiting in Line?

Are the men waiting in line,
Or are they stuck,
Trapped in time?

Are they rendered motionless
By the descending haze,
Or are they paralyzed by the stolen days?

Upon closer view, is the line a crowd?
Can it hide their anonymous faces,
As they silently stand,
Pondering the fate of the darker races?”
